Self Assessment

Throughout FIQWS: Creative Expression, I have learned much about myself and the academic learning that I hope to utilize throughout my college experience and future career. The learning objectives provided in the syllabus have helped me maintain a clear articulation of what I was expected to do, learn, and then keep up throughout this course. Positively, through the guidance of Professor Potts and Matias, their teaching, material, and assessments led me to complete all the outcomes throughout six months.

The first and third learning objectives, “Gather, interpret, and assess information from a variety of sources and points of view,” and, “Locate research sources in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias” are similar because they both speak upon gathering sources to be able to construct a quality essay. I achieved this objective to a great extent because I continued to stay on topic in my writing and with my topic, especially for the Research Essay, Since When Do We All Look Alike. When I received feedback from my peers,

they state how passionate I sound in my writing and how I continue to build on my introduction without getting off-topic.  Either searching up a scholarly source through CCNY’s Library or by looking up articles on Google, they all stay within the same category to help me organize my purpose and to have a straightforward target audience. When we learned how to tell the
difference between Primary and Secondary sources, I tried my best to depict the difference in all six sources. After having all my credible sources, I learned I am capable of breaking down which is more important, what is different within each author’s points of view, which will make my papers stronger.

The second learning objective, “Recognize the role of language attitudes and standards in empowering, oppressing, and hierarchizing languages and their users, and be open to communicating across different languages and cultures,” I did best in achieving during Phase 1, my Written Personal Narrative, The Beginning Of My Pipe Dream. During Phase 1, I was becoming aware of what was being expected of me to do for this course. I tried my best to follow the formats and strategies recommended to organize my thoughts. In terms of how I communicated myself in my writing, I know I set a good attitude towards my goal career, and how I made my way to realize who I want to be in the future and why. Through the empowerment of being a woman in the Bronx, in the Science field, I am being a voice and another story for generations to learn how there are different backgrounds in all fields. We are not limited to one because of our family, friends, or educators. I can recognize how I am eager to demonstrate my success to my family and make myself proud. Combined with learning objective six, “Articulate how meaning is created in the arts or communications and how experience is interpreted and conveyed,” I was in opportunities that required a lot of communication, thus allowing me to grow as a student and a worker for the benefit of others and myself. This process helped decide who I wanted to surround myself with and how I wanted to be perceived, which is important to me as I want to set a respectful image on paper and in person.

Speaking of the impact of the arts, within my Annotated Bibliography Essay I excelled in the last learning objective, “Analyze how arts from diverse cultures of the past serve as a foundation for those of the present, as well as describe the significance of works of art in the societies that created them.” I bring up the importance of how entertainment shapes our generation due to its global audience interaction. I explain there needs to be a drastic and obvious change with white casting because of how it has been normalized to white-pass lighter people of color and sets an expectation that we need to have a European appearance to fit in with society. This is unfair and degrading to many cultures, including mine. Through my personal feelings, I try to bring empathy to this social issue. That is why bringing in the past and how events still occur in the present is for awareness purposes. Then, I used learning objectives four and five, “Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations,” and, “Compose texts that integrate your stance with appropriate sources using strategies such as summary, critical analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and argumentation.” I guarantee my audience will be able to understand each source with the thorough analysis I made of what each author’s point across was and by using the appropriate sources overall. This helped build my main argument of misrepresentation for Afro Latinos within the film. Outside of the main idea of the sources and the media I provide, my writing could be interpreted as a writer who wants to make a social difference with how communities are treated because of how it creates global separation. Right now, we need to be more sure that our future families and friends learn to grow discipline and unite within the arts and other forms of expression. Even though we are allowed to have our thoughts and feelings, to be kind to one another because we may need the support of other communities.

The seventh learning objective, I am achieving right now as the course comes to an end. It states, “Identify and apply the fundamental concepts and methods of a discipline or interdisciplinary field exploring creative expression, including, but not limited to, arts, communications, creative writing, media arts, music, and theater.” To a certain extent, I always had a clear understanding of all forms of creative expression and how to keep a balance of one’s words and actions to get their point across. I hope by the end, to a great extent I can completely have the full knowledge to explain the fundamental concepts that are essential in the learning process through the use of my writing and revisions.

I will utilize what I learned in this course not just for my writing but for educational purposes in social aspects for when I achieve to get into the Educational/Teaching field. These learning objectives taught me to be patient and see the open perspective of others like me, and those different from me. Not only will this make my writing analysis and research for sources very easy but it will help me to write better-informed analysis and be organized with how much I want people to know and learn.
